Sarah came over last night for a tutoring session with Darren. From the little bits that I heard over my book, I think it was good. The mathematics covered were things that I might have once learned in school but have dutifully forgotten in an attempt to replace them with more… useful information such as pinball physics and random music facts. After they finished for the night I thought to myself, I think I might be able to do trinomials again! *Shock* I immediately began to wonder what more important information I may have just forgotten and nearly cried at the realization that I wouldn’t know exactly what I forgot because it’s… gone.
*sadness*
I hope it was a random useless trivia thing and not something important like the qualities of Hydrogen Peroxide or H2O2 which was first created in the UK by the burning of Ba (barium salt) which then produces barium peroxide or BaO2 and is mixed with water to create Hydrogen Peroxide and without a proper dilution, while inflammable itself, when in contact with a flammable substance like paper or cotton COULD cause spontaneous combustion or explosions. I don’t suggest mixing it with acetone at full strength, either. Thank the gods for dilution else we’d have all killed ourselves off early by accident. There is a long list of COMMON things it can react violently with. It is also a very good oxidizer.
Also, apparently I’m mildly allergic to Hydrogen Peroxide as of somewhere around 2000. I’ve been testing the theory again lately and I’m still getting negative results. Which reminds me, I need to get some new toothpaste.
I guess I kept that little tidbit.
What a geek.
I need to buy some Orange Glow or something to clean the wood floors, I have some swiffer pads but... meh. The floor deserves better. The cats don’t want sticky paws either, ew. I’d wax the floor if I didn’t think the cats would kill themselves slamming into the fridge or a doorway.
Friday: Kol Nidre dinner at Seth & Jennie’s house was very nice, matzo ball soup, salad, brisket… mmm… Started fasting at sundown.
Saturday: Woke up, was mildly hungry… gained hunger through the day. Went to temple at 4 o’clock at Temple Beth Shalom. It was very different!
I was wrong in assuming that it would be even remotely similar to Christian type services. The evening Yom Kippur service was about saying goodbye to those who left us this past year, self reflection, things that you can do to fulfill your life and enjoy it as you should. (My favorite was the “Top 100 List” of things big and small that you want to do before you die.) The Rabbi mentioned many of the famous people who died this year, including the fact that we lost three amazing tenors… and even a quick “Bless her heart” for Anna Nicole (to which everyone had a chuckle.) No, really… he said a nice sentence or three about everyone else. It was funny.
The services were welcoming, warm… relaxed. The guitarist played and sang beautifully… the violinist nearly made me cry while the flute kept a wistful harmony to the two. I was happy to learn more about Judaism.
We went to Lois & Rich’s afterwards to break fast. Darren & I were ravenous. We ate pastrami, roast beef and turkey on rye bread. I had a glass of wine with Lois and relaxed. It was good.
We stopped by Drug Mart on the way home to pick up some Amaretto & Sour mix. Darren and I were craving Amaretto Sours. We forgot how little of the sour we can handle though, heartburn city.
Oh yeah, I ripped my khakis. The inside of my left leg. Lovely.
Sunday: Woke up early and cleaned house a little before mom came over. She brought us a lovely Mabon blessing. I was so touched. Each thing was symbolic for the season… rice (grain), basil plant (herbs), candle (flame), pumpkin seeds (nuts), pansies (the winter sleep), a horn of plenty filled with fresh fruits (fruit harvest) and sweet potatoes (remember your roots.) Wow, that was really clever and thoughtful!
Mom and I went shopping for some clothes, she helped me pick out some things that didn’t make me look like a balloon on parade and we discovered a new brand of flavored water… interesting and good. We also went shopping for fresh veggies and things for dinner. Also picked up a bottle of Ravenswood Zinfandel, a rich flavor for a rich season.
We had a great harvest dinner, the only thing missing (hindsight is 20/20) was squash! We had green beans, rice, green onions with salt to dip them in, baby spinach salad, carrots… all sorts of good things. Even a natural raised chicken breast apiece. We had fruit salad for desert but I’m afraid we didn’t get to it… we were full.
So we had a cup of coffee and talked about cats and tattoos, not together, of course.
It was a good equinox day, a time for change in season and person.
It is my prediction that this winter will be particularly harsh so stock up on harvest items such as grains and dried fruits and such. The spiders have all come in early, the birds are acting funny and the cats have already shed their summer coats.
It’s interesting that Darren feels the same way. Hey Lynley, remember my birthday the other year?
We had dinner with Jim & Jodi last night, they invited us over to their house.
When they got back from California, they searched for a reasonable fixer-upper in Columbus. They found a beautiful historic home off Broad near the OSU hospital. Jim has been staying home to fix up the house while Jodi works... I can't remember for SURE but I believe it is for an environmental type agency.
Jim has been looking for a job around C-bus and thinks he may have found something with the local Habitat for Humanity fixing up their databases and so on and so forth.
Can you tell that these kids are serious about doing something good for the world? They're adorable... speaking of adorable, their cats... Mr. Kitty & Sweetie (I think?) are some of the cutest cats ever, they have such round faces and ears (unlike our girls who have sharp features.)
We had artichokes, a blend of roasted veggies (potato, zucchinis, asparagus and so forth) and chicken marinated in mustard, vinegar & some sort of hot pepper.
We talked of playing cards, our yards, neighbors and all the good and bad that comes with it. Their house is beautiful, a lot of lovely old wood, fireplaces and decorative ceilings. They’ve replaced some tile and wood upstairs and Jim added a wall here, knocked out a wall there… all without destroying the charm of the house. The cats were loving on us and drooling a little… it’s cute but ew! Hahaha
The boys talked of “the old days” of drinking and smoking cigars in their friends basement… yes, Darren… CIGARS. Hilarious.
There was a lot of chit-chat before we went home. Jodi picked some fresh Basil, Sage & Rosemary from the herb garden… I’m so jealous that they can grow herbs! We said our goodbyes and came home. The car smelled of fresh herbs again this morning… thank you Jodi!
BTW, apparently Isis LOVES Basil because when I put it on the counter she almost immediately jumped up to sample some. No wonder I can’t grow any herbs… she eats them all. I have to give her credit for her taste, nothing beats fresh.
Not too much to blog about yet today... Somehow, I still feel like blogging. Prepare for some absent minded rambling about whatnot and so forth.
Going to the gym after work today for my 1st of Three FREE Personal Training Sessions. So after work, we'll change and head over. Darren is trying to leave a few minutes early so that he can make his 4 o'clock appointment. Mine is at 4:30. I hope my meeting is productive. I really like the location and the equipment is top notch.
The cats were being super lazy-cute the other day so I had to snap a picture of them. Awww... my girls. You'll have to pardon the messy bed because I don't believe I feel like doing a Photoshop on the entire photo. They need a good brush down I have also decided to buy some 100% Organic cat shampoo. They're due for spring cleaning too!
Yesterday was the day FROM HELL!! Worked from 6:52am to 4:00pm without a break. Darren had some serious issues while installing for a client and he didn't get a break either. Also, we didn't really get to EAT anything until about 5 o'clock yesterday evening. I'm glad I have the prenatal vitamins else I might have had to eat my own foot.
The day ITSELF was fabulous! Went home and opened all the windows! It was very nice to have the cross breeze come through and clean the stuffy winter air out of the house. I turned off the gas to the fireplace and made sure that all of the valves were closed tightly. (This should save us a few bucks come the next gas bill!) *fingers crossed* Every little bit helps to save a lot in the long run environmentally and financially!
