Oh, how embarrassing. Twice in one day yesterday I made a major FUBAR. It’s embarrassing as hell but kind of painfully funny because of the stupid mistakes I’ve been making. Absentmindedness has never been so bad for the workplace.
So here’s what happened…
First, one of our vendors that we pay twice a month (for discounts) had a statement that was sent for the second half of December. I thought it was for the first half of January and used the discount at the bottom of the statement. Lois came back and asked why… the discount due date was clearly printed at the bottom “December 26th“ or something and I cut the check on January 3rd. Should have been NO discount. They’ll bill us for it later, I assume… but that was a highly embarrassing accounting error and should never have been made. : (
Second and most recently… I cost a labor bill for an installer yesterday to the WRONG installer AND wrong Job completely. It’s as if I didn’t think at all when I was doing it and reused the same form data over again. So now, we have an installer who was OVERPAID and an installer that was UNDERPAID and a job that doesn’t have a proper receipt for work done. *sigh* Another very embarrassing error that will no doubt cause headaches for HR for the next day or two.
I’m making a bloody mess of things, I don’t mean to… absentmindedness is killing me inside and out. Not thinking clearly though I think that I am at any given moment is going to get me fired. I’ve never made so many drastically stupid mistakes in a row in my life.
I think I’d operate better if I were impaired by drugs or alcohol at this moment than this damn preggy brain.
Oh well, back to delivering disaster... only 4.5 months left...
Why is it that we don’t have a better system for covering the front desks if our receptionist and/or HR person isn’t here? I think this is the first time that I've gotten into it with Anna.
I’m sorry but I can’t just drop everything I have and spend the day up front when I’m behind on work that I have to do.
The worst part? If I say that I can not cover the desk, whomever has asked gets all moody like they’re more important than I am when we’re pretty much equals. I get called to cover the phones and/or the front for all sorts of occasions.
Anna in particular annoys the piss out of me because she seems to think that my job doesn’t exist or something. Maybe she thinks that I don’t do anything important for the company or perhaps it’s because I don’t talk about my job to other persons in the company aside from 3 people. Nobody else needs to know the numbers or job cost specifics.
Nobody shares my job, I can’t just hand paperwork over to someone else to take care of it… I’m not the head of a department and I can’t roll the workflow downhill. I am the bottom of Accounting.
Another person that sometimes covers the front is a data entry type assistant who has her own assistant now… hello, likely candidate much? Why isn't SHE being called upon more often hmmm?
Just a little while ago, I was asked if I could cover part of the afternoon. Apparently, Anna (our Graphic Designer) was up front most of the day covering because Teresa (our Receptionist) had to go to Urgent Care and has been moved to the Emergency Room.
I don’t mind covering a little here and there but she wanted me to cover for the rest of the day…. No way. I can’t bring my work up with me and I don’t like to sit idle up front looking like I’m not doing anything. Well… right now, I’m pissed off and writing a blog but that's not something that I do often.
Anna was fine when I said I would be coming up at 2 to cover, then got irritated when I said I’d be done at 3. She said and I quote, “I don’t know why I always get stuck up there all day, I’ve got shows coming up.” (By shows she means marketing has shows and events to go to.)
Now I’m even more irritated. “Well, I have work to do… I have to pay the bills.”
“Yeah, well there won’t be any bills to pay if we don’t get those shows out” She said as she walked away… as if she doesn’t waste 75% of her day goofing off instead of making the signs for displays and stuff that she should be doing. I’ve done Graphic Design, I know that the programs we use here are easily installed on just about any other machine in the office and I know how well flash drives work… she just knows she can’t just goof off the entire time up front.
We just about got into it again a moment ago. Now she’s trying to dictate WHEN I’m going up… I offered 2-3. She wants me to go up 3-4 now. So pompous. I'm sick of people trying to walk on me.
Finally let myself cool off about semi-unrelated topics from last week. I need time away from things sometimes to keep myself from being rash or otherwise disruptive of the public. Some things came up that brought up something else that bothered me deeply… it’s not resolved but the situation was disrupted before it could amount to anything that I might strike at. Which is GOOD.
Going to the gym after work… haven’t gone in two days. Seriously slacking but I think we needed a couple nights to recover. So we’re going tonight and tomorrow. Maybe skip Saturday and then go Sunday & Monday. Apparently, Monday is Member appreciation day over at Lifestyle Family Fitness. Yay. Something about snackage and beverages. Delightful!
I can’t wait for the storms to get here… beautiful thunderstorms. I absolutely LOVE thunder. I’m not sure why. Maybe it’s just the power in it all… the ground rumbles and the sky splits as if cut with a pure white laser light. Limitless and wild as nature can get. Completely focused energy.
I remember back when I worked for Babies R Us, I could always tell the upcoming weather or current weather outside by the way that the small children behaved. If the kids were being excessively wild… you can bet it was clouding up outside or it was already beginning to storm.
Typically, they were more relaxed when the weather was calm. Alternately, if it HAD been storming and it was getting ready to end, there would be instant calm thought the store. The exception to this rule is if it’s storming lightly and it isn’t ready to end… and something bad is coming. DEAD quiet save for a few needy whimpers. I’ve only seen this happen twice and a few minutes later I faintly heard tornado sirens or hail.
Ah children, natures gift of weather forecasting to humans since we don’t have the instincts that help most of our animal friends.
I’m the new Guild Master, my first action in office was to remove people who hadn’t been online in over a year. Second was to arrange the ranks to a more suitable taste. My third action will be to redesign our Tabard. Now we just have to reestablish the standing on our server. Cake walk.
I leave you with this picture of a killer kitten...
It’s 2:40 in the morning. We should be in bed… or at least makin’ babies.
Alas, we are at the office. FAR from baby making territory…
Came in to do a seemingly easy task of updating the computers & servers with the new Daylight Savings Time changes and fixes. Most personal computers didn’t have much worry about the ordeal but I’m told a few people on home computers WERE victims of Calendar malfunction with Outlook.
Anyway, we came in at 9 o’clock Monday night. It’s nearly 3 o’clock Tuesday morning and we’ve been up for 22 hours. The machines are all working pretty well… we THINK. All the updates were run and ready for the marketers in the morning… the SERVER, however… isn’t. That means that the programs that our marketers run will not be available. This is also why we’re still here, they HAVE to be able to use those programs, our business depends on it.
I am not the network administrator, I’m just his wife and assistant. I feel that I have a personal obligation to try to make things faster, keep him awake and give him company so he doesn’t have to go through this miserable lot alone.
I’ll be expected to show up for work at 7 o’clock as usual. He will have the option to go home since it is his job to upkeep and maintain our network and I think he SHOULD go home. : ) It was my choice to come with but this isn’t my job, I’m responsible for Accounting. I think that if we were to leave RIGHT NOW (2:54) we would get home at 3:30 and be asleep just before 4 o’clock….I don’t believe I’d be able to function properly if I were to try to take a nap. Oh well.
I’m taking little breaks between paragraphs. Breaks to type in commands and run lines or to simply smile at my hubby and silently say “I love you.” He looks miserable. Awwwwww…..
He’s on the phone with Microsoft right now, trying to resolve the matter through their support. So far, nothing seems to be showing as the issue for the server. When Darren calls Microsoft Support, you KNOW something is fucked.
Ok, it's now 3:25 and they seem to have isolated a few suspects. We can now access the internet, Outlook and Improveit! 360 and I can see the server from this client machine. Huzzah. My Monster energy drink is dwindling down to a bit of nothing in the bottom of my can.
3:42, Still working on it. Server is rebooting. Gawd, you must be bored from reading this…. I just hope I can post it shortly. Now if we could only get the damn 2000 machines working with it. DAMNIT ALL!!!
4:06, Microsoft has completed their obligation and has billed IHR $490 respectively for the call. Gotta love it when big corporations take responsibility for their bugs. Nobody seems to know why it didn’t work when we first gave it a try… but apparently, it works fine. Joy… we could have been in bed at 1:30. I’m finishing up this blog and don’t expect to hear from me today… I’ll be too pooped to blog.
Have a great day for me, would you? : )
